March 03, 2025

Decaf coffee allows you to enjoy cups of coffee without experiencing any of the unwanted side effects. Although decaf coffee isn’t 100% caffeine-free, it has a much lower caffeine content compared to regular coffee. But, does decaf coffee dehydrate you? Read our article to find out.

How Much Caffeine is in Decaf Coffee?

It may come as a surprise that decaf coffee isn’t completely caffeine-free; however, the amount of caffeine in decaf is very minimal.

A regular cup of decaf coffee (8 oz) contains around 2-15mg of caffeine, whereas ‘normal’ coffee contains 95-200mgof caffeine. As you can see there is a huge difference in the caffeine content in both decaf and regular coffee.

How is Coffee Decaffeinated?

There are many different methods that can be used to decaffeinate coffee, such as:

  • The indirect and direct solvent process
  • The Swiss water method
  • The Co2 method
  • The Sugarcane method
  • The Washed method

These are some of the many ways you can decaffeinate coffee; however, the most common method is the direct solvent method.

At Crosby Coffee, we use the sugarcane and washed method to decaffeinate all of our decaf coffee while maintaining the bean's flavour and antioxidants.

Is Decaf Coffee Good for You?

Drinking decaf coffee in moderation is good for you as it offers a wide range of benefits. There are many reasons why people choose decaf coffee, including:

  • To reduce their caffeine consumption
  • If they are pregnant
  • If they suffer from migraines
  • If they struggle to sleep
  • To reduce their anxiety levels

Decaf coffee allows you to enjoy a few cups of coffee without experiencing bladder issues or jitters. You may be thinking, ‘Does decaf coffee still contain antioxidants?’ and the answer is yes, it does.

Decaf coffee contains the same antioxidants and health benefits as regular coffee; the only difference is that regular coffee has more negative effects and a higher caffeine content.

Does Decaf Coffee Dehydrate You?

So, does drinking decaf coffee dehydrate you? The answer is no, decaf coffee doesn’t dehydrate you; this is simply a myth. But why do people think decaf coffee causes dehydration? It’s simple. Coffee is classed as a diuretic (a drug that increases urine production).

However, coffee is a very mild diuretic, which means that higher doses of caffeine in certain people will cause a slight increase in urine. Whereas a low to moderate amount of caffeine does not cause a diuretic effect.

As you can see, caffeine does have the potential to increase your urine production; however, a 2014 study stated that there is no evidence of dehydration associated with moderate caffeine intake.

So, you can enjoy your daily cups of coffee without worrying about becoming dehydrated. But, it’s important to remember not to drink too much coffee, as excessive amounts of caffeine can cause unwanted side effects.
